The Oil Spill in Santa Barbara – Why is anyone surprised?

Oil spills are back in the news, at least here in California, as we find out that instead of the 21,000 gallons of crude oil initially reported, at least 105,000 gallons have spilled into the beaches of Santa Barbara and in to the ocean, and that Plains Pipeline, the company that operates the failed pipeline has a history of infractions

While this is really bad news, it should come as a surprise to no one.  The simple fact is that any time we move oil there is a risk of spillage.  Move enough, something is going to spill – have enough miles of pipe, something is going to fail.

Better regulation, better monitoring, and real penalties for offending companies could help.  But there is only one way to totally prevent oil spills – stop using oil
