Extinction and Nature Loss Hurts All of Us

The Wilderness Society recently published a list of 6 ways extinction and nature loss hurt people

  • Make people sicker
  • Decrease water and air quality
  • Hurt our ability to grow and gather food
  • Deepen the impact of extreme weather events
  • Weaken our ability to combat climate change
  • Make us miserable (probably)

Some of these jump out at me. For example, one theory about the cause of covid-19 was the encroachment of human activity on wildlife.

When anything is removed from the ecological web, it weakens the entire environmental network and makes it less resilient, which means that other species are put under increased pressure.

A well known case of this is Colony Collapse Disorder. If honeybees become extinct, food shortages will become severe
